Primate Write-Up According to Wikipedia, spider monkeys tend to live in medium sized groups of around two or three dozen individuals called troops, averaging at about 15 to 25 individuals in a group. The group will break up into smaller bands on occasion, like to split up to forage for food resources or if there are not enough resources to support the entire group to increase their chances of survival. They are typically found in large, unoccupied areas in the upper layer of the rainforests of Central and South America but can also be found in Mexico. They are primarily arboreal, meaning the spend most of their time swinging from trees, using their prehensile tails to move around. The males spend most of their time on the ground foraging f or food. As for locomotion, they move around on the ground on all fours using their long arms and short hind legs, walking on the toes of all four of their limbs, but when in trees they move by lateral jumping. They typically live in large groups, averaging at around 615 individuals, called hordes. The largest group ever measured included around 1200 individuals. Hordes are made up of adult females and their offspring with the males only entering during mating season. The males otherwise like a solitary lifestyle. The males are still the more dominant ones and can be aggressive towards each other, like during mating season when conflicts can be deadly but are somewhat rare. Mating season starts around June or July and ends around September or October. The females will choose their mate based on his status, which they can visible see based on the bright colors of the males face and rump. Only the largest, most dominant, and most colorful males will sire offspring. The first focal animal I chose to observe was a female adult spider monkey named Gumbelina who was sitting with a few of the other monkeys that were all sitting and grooming each other.
